Vid & Evolving Vision
Trace the philosophical foundations of yoga through the Vedas, principal Upaniṣads and Sāṃkhya philosophy. Explore the evolution of sacred symbolism, cosmology and human inquiry through research, storytelling and creative interpretation.
To see is one thing. To understand what we see is another.
The Sanskrit root dṛś gives us darśana: seeing, vision and a philosophical way of looking at the world. Vid, the root of Veda, means to know.
From the elemental powers of the Vedic hymns to the penetrating questions of the Upaniṣads, the history of yoga reveals an evolving human endeavor to understand the nature of existence.
DARŚANA invites us to explore these ancient visions, to recognize the perspectives through which we interpret experience and to ask how knowledge becomes wisdom.

What does it mean to know? How do we distinguish what is real from what merely appears to be real? And how have the stories and philosophical systems of India shaped the ways yoga understands the human experience?
DARŚANA introduces the historical foundations of yoga through the evolving intellectual and contemplative traditions of ancient India.
We begin with the Vedas, where the powers of nature are expressed through the poetic and ritual language of the devas. Agni, Vāyu, Sūrya, Uṣas and other Vedic figures reveal a world understood through elemental relationships, sacred speech and the forces of creation.
Rather than reducing these figures to religious personalities or modern psychological archetypes, we examine their historical contexts, symbolic functions and the meanings that emerge through careful interpretation.
Our study then turns to the principal Upaniṣads, where questions about ritual, knowledge, mortality, consciousness and the nature of the Self become increasingly central. Through selected narratives and teachings, we encounter the development of concepts such as ātman, brahman, karma, saṃsāra and mokṣa.
Finally, we investigate the foundations of Sāṃkhya philosophy, including puruṣa, prakṛti, the three guṇas and the principles of manifestation. These concepts establish an essential framework for understanding the philosophy of Patañjali and the distinctive contributions of later yogic and Tantrik traditions.
Two creative research projects bring these teachings into active engagement.
In the Vedic Deity Report, each student researches an elemental deva, examining its appearance in Vedic literature, symbolic significance and relationship to the natural world.
In the Upaniṣad Project, students develop an original creative response to a selected teaching or narrative, exploring how ancient philosophical questions continue to illuminate contemporary human experience.
DARŚANA establishes the intellectual groundwork for the studies that follow, cultivating historical awareness, philosophical curiosity and the ability to distinguish between traditional teachings and modern interpretation.
The aim is not simply to acquire another philosophy, but to understand how the ways we see shape the worlds we inhabit.
Welcome to the DARŚANA Treasury.
Here you will find readings, recorded teachings, study resources and project guidelines exploring the historical foundations of yoga.
Begin with the Vedic world and its elemental powers, continue into the philosophical inquiries of the Upaniṣads and conclude with the foundational concepts of Sāṃkhya.
The Vedic Deity Report and Upaniṣad Project invite you to bring scholarship into conversation with personal inquiry, developing both interpretive skill and creative expression.
