Ayurvedic Eye-Wash
Taken internally, triphala is known to help support good eye health. Triphala eye-wash is a practice to directly soothe and repair strained or inflamed eyes. It has even been used to treat more serious eye disorders like glaucoma and cataracts. Please note, however, While triphala eye washes are a common practice in Ayurvedic medicine, your eye tissue is precious and sensitive. Please consult with your healthcare professional first, if you have cataracts, glaucoma or other severe eye injuries or disorders.
Boil 1 c. water for 10 minutes then add ½ tsp. triphala powder. Set aside to let this mixture steep and completely cool. Strain three times, twice through cheesecloth or muslin and one final time through a coffee filter. You do not want any remaining powder in your eyewash. Adding 1 Tbs. rosewater to your tirphala wash makes it particularly cooling for pitta provoked eyes, but be sure there are no added chemicals that could sting you.
Fill the eye baths ¾ full of triphala wash and place over your eyes, one at a time. Hold your eye open in the solution for 2-5 minutes (you will want to be in a comfortable position, seated and relaxing over a towel to catch any drops). Then close your eyes and rest for 2-5 minutes. Be sure to avoid using a television, computer, or phone screens for at least an hour after your eyewash.
*There may be a little stinging at first until you get accustomed to this practice. If the sting is overwhelming, discontinue the practice.
